Freud theorized that much of the psychological disorders found in women were the result of their frustrated desires to be men. He believed the origin of this desire began in childhood, when a girl realizes she lacks a penis and seeks to vicariously obtain one by giving birth to a male child. Later psychoanalysts such as Karen Horney argued what women actually envied were the social status and power of men in early twentieth century society. Which of these viewpoints do you agree with and why? Are these viewpoints relevant in today’s times when women are competing with men in all spheres of life? Why? Do you believe, as Horney theorized, that women tend to judge themselves as inferior because masculinity is highly valued by society? Why? Support your answers with appropriate research and reasoning. Be sure to cite references to support your conclusions.
