FINAL EXAMINATION

 

Please note the Final Exam is due by 5pm on Friday, October 7th, there are NO EXCEPTIONS to this hard deadline due to university policy. However, you can choose to start working on it and submit it as early as week 8. PLEASE NOTE: Late Submissions cannot be accepted.

 

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose two chapters from the following, then choose one question from each of the two chapters of your choice. Write thoughtful essays of at least 2 pages per question. Write well-organized essays with introduction, essay body, and conclusion. Be sure to properly cite the material you are using and remember to use APA format. Your final exam paper submission should include a Cover page and also a works cited page referencing our main course text and any other sources you cited. 

 

 

Ch 24:

1. Write a thoughtful essay on the causes of the Great Depression. Explain how New Dealers approached this depression, and discuss the New Dealers' major reforms to save the American economy. Give examples. What was the real factor that ended the Great Depression?

 

Ch 26:

  1. Discuss the origins of the Cold War and the sources of growing tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union at the close of World War II.

  2. Describe the basic elements of President Harry Truman's policy of containment. How did the threat of atomic warfare affect this policy?

  3. Describe the impact of McCarthyism on American political life. How did the anti-Communism campaigns affect the media? What were the sources of Senator Joseph McCarthy's popularity? What brought about his downfall?

 

Ch 28:

  1. What were the key legal and political antecedents to the civil rights struggle in the 1940s and early 1950s? What organizations played the most central role? Which tactics continued to be used, and which were abandoned?

  2. How did African American communities challenge legal segregations in the South? Compare the strategies of key organizations, such as the NAACP, SNCC, SCLC, and CORE?

  3. Discuss the varieties of white resistance to the Civil Rights Movement. Which were most effective in slowing the drive for equality?

 

Ch 29:

  1. Discuss the events that led up to and contributed to U.S. involvement in Vietnam. How did U.S. involvement in the war affect domestic programs?

  2. Discuss the reasons the protest movement against the Vietnam War started on college campuses. Describe how these movements were organized and how the opponents of the war differed from the supporters.

 

Ch 30:

  1. Describe the central philosophical assumptions behind Reaganomics. What were the key policies by which it was implemented? To what extent were these policies a break with previous economic approaches?

  2. Evaluate Reagan's foreign policy. How did it differ from Carter's approach to foreign policy?

 

Ch 31:

1. Evaluate the presidency of Bill Clinton. Compare his domestic and foreign policies to those of the Republican presidents who preceded and followed him in office. What was the impact of the scandals that plagued his presidency?
