Comparison 1: Byzantine and Islamic architecture both developed, in part, out of the remnants of the Roman Empire. Compare and contrast the Dome of the Rock, 687-692 (pages 145-147) with the Church of Hagia Sophia, 532-537 (pages 126-129). What features of Roman architecture do these buildings incorporate? What are the principal similarities and differences between them and how do these reflect the function of the buildings?

Comparison 2: Throughout its history, Christian art often relied on lavish materials and luxurious effects. Compare and contrast the Reliquary Statue of Sainte Foye, late 10th to early 11th century (page 170), with the mosaic of Justinian, Bishop Maximianus, and attendants, from San Vitale in Ravenna, c. 567 (pages 129-132). Describe the materials and appearance of these works in detail. Why did the patrons and viewers of these works use such expensive materials?

Comparison 3: During the Romanesque and Gothic periods, churches evolved into massive structures of unprecedented architectural sophistication. Compare Saint Sernin, c. 1070-1120 (pages 170-171) with the Chartres Cathedral (late 12th century) (pages 192-196). What do these buildings have in common? What do these buildings tell us about how churches were used at this time? What are the most significant architectural developments that have taken place between the Romanesque and Gothic which distinguish these buildings?
