Select 4 separate passages from the Mahfouz novel, The Day the Leader Was Killed, that you think are very important. Describe what happens in each passage and why what happens is important. What do the passages and the characters tell you about Egypt in the late 20th century? Discuss how these passages and characters comment on some of the changes that Egypt experiences in the 20th century, for example, globalization, secularization, religious revival, etc. How is Egypt’s traditional culture reflected? How do modern culture and traditional culture contrast or come together? Be specific about the passages.
Use only Mahfouz and maybe BZ as your sources. There is no need to go outside. In all cases, be sure to cite your sources, not just when you quote, but when you paraphrase and summarize. Cite using MLA style.
