Answer both questions.  Each question should be answered in an essay response of approximately 750 words (typically three double-spaced typed pages).  Answer all parts of the question and make explicit references both to relevant readings and to the lectures.  When referring to the readings, provide a clear reference to the article you are addressing.  You are welcome to quote from the articles in support of your answers.  If you do so, please provide page numbers.

Question One

One theme we have been discussing in class is the impact of the association of sex with harm and how this conception is linked to the view of active and passive roles in sexuality.  Provide a description of the ways in which sex is associated with harm and then discuss how this conception of sexuality has influenced contemporary attitudes about one of the following: 1) marriage and sexual pleasure outside of marriage, 2) the gendering of sexual roles, 3) sex work and pornography, or 4) rape.  In supporting your response, bring in material a) from class lectures and b) discuss the work of at least three of the following authors in support of the ideas you develop: Baumrin, Bogart, Nussbaum, Pineau.

Question Two

Another central theme of the class has been the claim that the categories of “homosexuality” and “heterosexuality” and the correlated division between women and men (and femininity/ masculinity) are neither transhistorical, i.e., are not the same in all historical periods, (Plato’s Symposium, Halperin, Dean) nor transcultural, i.e., are not the same in all cultures even during the same time period (Almaguer, Driskill) nor even descriptive of our experiences of sex and of sexuality (Fausto-Sterling, Ferrer, Rich).  Provide an overview of the arguments developed in these texts and in relevant lectures concerning this theme, being careful to provide specific examples from the readings and lectures to explain why universalizing sexual identities is problematic.
