For your essay assignment, you are expected to write a paper of 7-9 pages addressing one of the topics below: • Compare and contrasts Hobbes and Rousseau’s theories of human nature. In doing so, you should a) explain the state of nature and life in for both theorists b) explain the role of reason and language in humans for both theorists and c) explain how the concept of the Good comes into existence for both theorists.Evaluation You will be evaluated on both form and content. Content: This paper requires you to carefully analyze and exposit the arguments from the texts we have been working on this semester. In detailing these arguments you should pay very close attention to the text and use quotations to support your argument. Quotations should not stand in for what you have to say but should clarify and reinforce the argument you are making. The content should be primarily interested in the argument from the texts that we have read, demonstrating what is at stake, their structure, and how the arguments are put forth. When arguing against a particular claim or thesis that a given philosopher has developed, you must do this by showing how the argument itself comes into contradiction on the very terms that it has laid out. Avoid making unargued assertions. Avoid giving mere opinions. Form: Your paper should be clear and comprehensible such that even a person unfamiliar with the texts we have read could follow the logic and motivation of your arguments. Thus, organization will be key. The first step in achieving this organization is having an identifiable introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction should give the reader a clear indication of what you are going to do and how you are going to do it. It should be around two or three paragraphs. These can often be the most important paragraphs of your essay because they are the building blocks and the road map for the rest of the paper. You must be clear in your introduction what your thesis statement is and explain how you will go about defending and illustrating this claim. The body of your text is where you explicate the details and must therefore be very organized. I suggest working with an outline, as this will help you to see exactly how you are going to develop your conceptualization and move fluidly from one topic to the next. You should have three or four main points to support your thesis. These points should be carefully argued for and established in the course of your body paragraphs. Every body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence and clearly elaborate an argument. Avoid meandering through unconnected points. Your conclusion should summarize what you have developed. It must pull everything together and concisely re-state your overall conceptualization and explain to the author what has been established in this paper. This is also the place where you can reflect on the overall conclusions that have been arrived at in the paper and speculate on wider implications. Format: The essay is to be double-spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman font, with one-inch margins on the left, right, top and bottom. Please put your name, “PHL 240”, and a title at the top. Resources: Books: - Hobbes, Leviathan - Rousseau, The Second Discourse, “Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequality Among Men,” Preface and Introduction You are welcome to do secondary research in the library and through online academic resources (avoid Wikipedia, and blog type articles—JSTOR and academic articles are fine) to further investigate your topic. Bibliography: Please cite all of your sources according to the MLA
