Dear All,

Below you will find the guidelines for the second essay. We will discuss it more in class, but please let me know if you have any questions. This one should be more fun and creative than the first essay. See you soon!

 SECOND ESSAY GUIDELINES-

Due by Friday December 9th by 11:59 PM. Minimum of 900 words typed, double-spaced, and font size 12. Please email me your completed essay included as an attachment, or just submit a hard copy in class (preferred because you will receive more detailed feedback on the essay).

Choose ONE contemporary (after 1918) work of art that you like or has personal meaning to you. Although "art" is difficult to define, choose a film, television show, song, album, painting, photo, play, etc. If you have an idea to write about something that isn't something traditionally recognized as art, please let me know and we can discuss the possibility. While writing this essay BE CRITICAL; you should be ACTIVELY engaging the "text" and applying concepts that we have learned in class to the work. DO NOT summarize the work or give a lengthy background.

RELATE the work to a time period, theory, aesthetic principle(s), or concept from class.

COMPARE/CONTRAST your chosen work to other works. How is your work unique? How does your work fit in with similar works?

BE INTERDISCIPLINARY. How does your chosen work relate to other disciplines? How can you blend or analyze your work with other fields?

BE SPECIFIC. BE SPECIFIC. BE SPECIFIC. Do not pick a large body of works or Be detailed in your examples from the text. Use quotes from the text. While you might start the essay off with a general argument or examine it in a broad lens, as the essay goes on you should specify traits, instances, or elements of the work that exemplify what you are talking about.

CITE! CITE! CITE! I should know which words/ideas are yours and which ones are borrowed. Don't plagiarize. It will cost you dearly. Use appropriate sources as well (no Wikipedia, don't just google stuff for information).

Cheers,
