Part III: In-class essay (50 pts.)
Two of the following essays will appear on the exam. You will be asked to answer one of those two questions. The questions are not designed to be mutually exclusive; that is, information used in answering one question might also be used in answering another. Also please remember that you need to include specific evidence and examples, and that you need to use appropriate academic discourse in writing for your audience. As such, remember to:

1. Many Americans sought to reform and improve society during the first half of the nineteenth century. Discuss these efforts, making sure to explain the economic changes and demographic changes in which they occurred, attempts to change institutions, the temperance movement, and the growing opposition to slavery. Did all of the communities opposed to slavery agree on methods and goals? Explain. Use the lectures, the essay in Voices of Freedom on the Complaint of a Lowell Factory Worker, and the Give Me Liberty! textbook to write a complete answer.
2. Many Americans sought to create a distinctly American republic during the first half of the nineteenth century. Discuss these efforts, making sure to explain the economic changes and demographic changes in which they occurred as well as contemporary trends in art, architecture, language, literature, and religion. Discuss the different perceptions of women’s role in society and the importance of the Seneca Falls Convention? Use the lectures, the Voices of Freedom sources from Emerson, Thoreau, and the Declaration of Sentiments from the Seneca Falls Convention, and the Give Me Liberty! textbook to write a complete answer.
3. Sectional rivalries between the North and the South greatly increased in the decade leading up to the Civil War. Discuss these tensions, making sure explain why it came to a war. Why were the two sides not able to compromise? Discuss the feelings of political disenfranchisement in the North, the attempts by the Pierce administration to expand the United States, the Compromise of 1850, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the resulting crisis in Kansas, and the Dred Scott case. Use the lectures, the Voices of Freedom source on South Carolina Secession, and the Give Me Liberty! textbook to fully develop your argument and write a complete answer.
4. Explain the economic, political, cultural, and social causes of the Civil War. What advantages and disadvantages did both the North and South have? What part did new weapons technology play in the war? How did Lincoln’s issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation affect the war effort? What factors besides battle caused the Civil War to be so costly in lives?
