This research focuses on the effects of the transgressions of ingroup members and how national culture influences personal responsibility and the moral emotions of guilt and shame for those who are uninvolved in such transgressions. This research identifies the important role that culture plays in shaping feelings of personal responsibility and, consequently, self-oriented behaviors of maintaining their moral image.

Hypothesis 1: East Asians (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, Koreans) will feel more personal responsibility and moral emotions (i.e., guilt and shame) than Americans will for a fellow countryman’s transgression.

Hypothesis 2: East Asians (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, Koreans) will engage in more self-image maintenance behaviors than Americans will after a countryman’s transgression.
