Discussion Starter Question #5

The WBS

Notice all the outcomes which flow from the WBS. Work packages are found in a WBS. They are essential to the diagramming the direction of tasks. "A work package is simply a label that identifies a specific level in the structure.  And wherever an activity falls, it falls. It is not a matter of something absolutely being a level 3 subtask. It is a function of how the work is actually structured (Lewis, 2010)." I have found that work packages are used during every project in my organization.  It allows for a visual outline or structure displaying whom will handle certain tasks and where they will flow to during their next step.

Would someone like to explain to the class, what is a WBS?

Discussion Starter Question #6

Project Planning

Chapter eight discusses the importance of planning on a project. I always include every staff member in the planning process. I call it the "Wisdom of the Crowd." In short, more heads are better than one! Together we make the plan and then together we work the plan. This allows buy-in for everyone. Unilateral planning is in play when everyone is on board with the final plans. "No project can succeed when the team members have no com- commitment to the plan, so the first rule of project planning is that the people who must do the work should help plan that part of the project (Lewis, 2010)." Plenty of projects that lack planning fail to succeed and reach their desired outcome for the product or service.

What are your thoughts on planning?
