Description

In this assignment you will analyze transcripts of qualitative interviews with burglars.

Instructions

In this assignment we will read transcripts on open-ended interviews with professional burglars. Some of the guiding research questions that this study seeks to answer are:

  • What is the process of becoming a burglar like?
  • How are burglaries organized?
  • How do burglars pick targets?
  • How do burglars feel about what they are doing?
  • What is the role of substance abuse in burglary?

Pick one or two of these to focus on.

In answering these and other questions, you need to think about what different patterns there are in the transcripts that you read. It is unlikely that there will be only one way of organizing a burglary, to pick one example, but it is also unlikely that everyone does it in a completely unique way.

The interview transcripts were obtained from ICPSR.

Question 1

  1. Use a table of random numbers or a random number generator to select at least 3 interviews. Click here to got to a random number generator. Click three times to get three numbers with a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 105.

What are the numbers of your three interviews?

Question 2

  1. Do not print the transcripts in the lab! If you want to print them elsewhere that is up to you.

You may want to copy the interviews to your computer so that you can add notes.

Read the three interviews and write about the common themes or patterns that you can identify in the responses given by the burglars. It may help to compare answers to the same questions in the different interviews. You probably want to pick one or two of the research questions listed above to answer.

As you are reading you may want to copy and paste important quotations into a document or to highlight (or use comments on) them in some way so that you can find them when you are writing the essay.

The first interview usually takes a long time to read, then each additional interview will be faster (because you know what to expect).
