Essay 1 Prompt: Explain an author’s philosophy of education from the section on Education in Ideas that Matter. Touch on the key points of the article. The explanation should include the writer’s values, as well as the writer’s notion of what constitutes education.In the course of your explanation, use your own experiences to illustrate the author’s points. Remember that the focus of the assignment is not your experience; the focus is the article. Your experiences are examples. Maintain the focus on the article.You are using your expertise (ethos) as a student to develop an explanation of the author’s philosophy. Or more simply—you are showing how the philosophy applies to you. 

 

DO NOT identify specific individuals. This paper is not an opportunity to complain about a teacher or instructor. DO NOT use this essay as a political or religious platform.  You are explaining a writer’s philosophy not your own. 

To develop your points, you will need to include specific quotes from the primary source (the work about which you are writing).  These quotes must be documented with parenthetical citations.

The paper should include a title that suggests the direction and focus of the paper.  In other words, include a title that identifies the author and indicates what aspect of the author’s writing on which you will focus.“Essay 1” is not an appropriate title. “Mencius, Education, and College The title of your essay is centered at the top of the paper.  DO NOT use bold, italics, or underlining for your title. The title of the essay you are addressing, the essay from the text, is placed in quotation marks: “On Liberal Arts and Vocational Studies"

Paper must be gramatically correct. Although the essay will include personal experiences the tone should be formal you are addressing an academic idea to an academic audience.
