part A

This Assignment addresses three different aspects – epistemology, theoretical perspective & the research question – of the research process based on the online lectures & the tutorials content. Note that this assignment is NOT in essay form, but rather short answers to each of the set questions.

You need to answer the set of questions in relation to the selected research reports from the reading list as indicated below. You must reference (include page numbers) your answer to each question, that is, make sure you give in-text references to the specific text/page that provides the basis for your answer.

You may also cross-reference to other answers if you think that is appropriate. Please use the attached template as this will help you to stay on track & assist the marker to know which question you are answering.

N.B.: your reference list & the template questions are NOT INCLUDED in the 600 word limit.

You need to complete the following activities:

Read and take notes of the following – but the notes you take on the readings are not the assignment:

Bryman (2016) – relevant sections of Chapters 1 & 2 – PLUS TWO of the following research articles

  • Andersen, C, Bunda, T & Walter, M 2008, ‘Indigenous higher education: the role of universities in releasing the potential’, Australian Journal of Indigenous Education, vol. 37, pp. 1-8.

  • Brescoll, V & LaFrance, M 2004, ‘The correlates and consequences of newspaper reports of research on sex differences’, Psychological Science, vol. 15, no. 8, pp. 515-20.

  • Cullen, B T & Pretes, M 2000, ‘The meaning of marginality: interpretations and perceptions in social science’, Social Science Journal, vol. 37, no. 2, pp. 215-29.

Based on your & reading  answer the first 3 questions in relation to two of the research articles above:

  1. Explain in your own words the purpose of the research.

  1. Explain in your own words the specific research question being investigated.

  1. Explain in your own words what justifications have been provided for undertaking the research.

Answer the following 2 question in relation to ONE of the research articles you have already selected:

  1. Explain in your own words the epistemological underpinnings of the research.

  1. Explain in your own words the theoretical perspective of the research.

NOTE: In answering all the questions above use your own words & remember to include the relevant page number/s in your in-text citations.

Q. What is the format of the reflection?

Answer: This assignment is NOT an essay but rather short answers to each of the set questions.

Q. What is the word count?

Answer: The total word limit for reflection 1 is 600.

Q. Do I include in-text references?

Answer: Yes, you must reference & include page numbers in your answer to each question. So ensure you give in-text references to the specific text/page that provides the basis for your answer.  You may also cross-reference to other answers if you think that is appropriate.

Q. Can I identify a theoretical perspective/framework simply as "conflict perspective", "Marxism", "Indigenous paradigm"?

Answer: Yes, however you need to contextualise & explain the meaning of the framework in relation to the research article your reflection is based upon. For example, what do you mean by "Marxism" (contextualise as you would for any other SSaP assignment).

part B

This Assignment addresses two main different aspects (i.e. research design/methodology and

methods for data collection) of the research process based on the online lectures and the tutorials content. Note that the assignment is NOT an essay but short answers to each of the

set questions.

You need to answer the set of questions in relation to nominated journal articles taken from the reading list as indicated below. You must reference (include page numbers) your answer to each question, that is, make sure you give in-text references to the specific text/page that provides the basis for your answer. You may also cross reference to other answers if you think that is appropriate. Your reference list is NOT INCLUDED in the 600 words limit.

To complete Assessment Item 1 Reflective Journal 2 you need to complete the following

activities:

Read and take notes of the following (The notes you take on the readings are not the assignment):

  • Gurran, N., 2003. Housing locally: positioning Australian local government housing for a new century. Urban Policy and Research, 21(4), pp.393–412.

  • Horsfall, D., Noonan, K. & Leonard, R. 2012. Bringing our dying home: How caring for someone at end of life builds social capital and develops compassionate communities. Health Sociology Review, 21, 373-382.

  • Willis, P 2009, ''It really is water off our backs': young LGBQ people's strategies for resisting and refuting homonegative practices in Australian workplaces', Gay and Lesbian Issues and Psychology Review, vol. 5, no. 3, pp. 134-45.

Based on your reading of these articles, any relevant chapter in Bryman (2016) you consider applicable, and the lecture and tutorial content, answer the first 2 questions in relation to TWO of the research articles above:

  1. Identify the methodology/research design for each of the articles you have selected. What justification/explanation for choosing the methodology/research design was provided by the researcher(s)?

  2. Explain in your own words what method(s) have been used to collect the research data. What justification/explanation for choosing these methods was provided by the researchers?

    AND

Answer the following question in relation to only ONE of the research articles

  1. What do you consider to be the rationale linking the research process reported in the article from epistemological/theoretical perspective and research purpose through to methodology/research design and the research methods for data collection?

NOTE: In answering all the questions above use your own words and remember to reference the answers you give to the relevant page number(s).

Q. What is the format of the reflection?

Answer: This assignment is NOT an essay but short answers to each of the set questions.

Q. What is the word length for the reflection?

Answer: 600 words.

Q. Do I have to provide in-text references?

Answer: Yes, you must reference (include page numbers, Harvard style) your answer to each question, that is, make sure you give in-text references to the specific text/page that provides the basis for your answer.  You may also cross reference to other answers if you think that is appropriate.

Q. Can I include more than one methodology?

Answer: Methodology can be combined but think about whether it is that there is a single methodology incorporating different methods for collecting and analysing data, as the methods are determined by methodology but not the same as methodology.

Q. What is meant by "rationale linking the research process reported in the article from epistemological/theoretical perspective?"

Answer: This is assessing your ability to trace the linkages in the research process from the epistemology and theoretical perspective through to the choice of data collection. For example, in what way did methodology influence the choice of methods for data collection.

Q. Is methodology is the same as research design in terms of conveying the same concepts or do we state the methodology then the research design?

Answer: Methodology and research design are directly connected but not the same. The methodology is your approach to the research - eg ethnography, action research, survey research, etc; reflecting your theoretical perspective and approach to research. The research design incorporates the research process determined by your methodology and sets out the steps in your research including specific methods for collecting the research data and for analysing this data. These must be planned in the research design not left to the last minute.

Q. Can I write in the first person

Answer: Yes but do not forget to reference your sources as this is an academic assignment
