 Diagram of the Atmosphere:

Draw a cross-sectional diagram of the atmosphere. Include and label the following features:

  1. Layers – Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere
  2. “Pauses” – Tropopause, Stratopause, Mesopause
  3. The Ozone Layer (it should be in the correct layer of the atmosphere)
  4. The temperature profile for each layer – indicate whether temperature increases or decreases as you increase in altitude
  5. Atmospheric mass – include the approximate location of the line dividing the upper and lower 50% of atmospheric mass (it should be in the correct layer of the atmosphere)

The submission must be your original drawing, or no points will be awarded.

Atmospheric Compostion:

Answer the following questions:

  1. What are the three most common gases in the atmosphere, in order from highest to lowest concentrations? Include the concentration (rounding to the nearest percent is acceptable).
  2. Explain the importance of each of the following variable atmospheric gases:
  • Water vapor
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Ozone

      c. What are particulates (also known as aerosols)? Provide a definition and at least three examples.

Weather and Climate:

  1. In your own words, explain the difference between weather and climate.
  2. What information appears on climographs? See the sample climograph, below.
