Assignment 1

As division head, you have been assigned to oversee a new project that will require exacting work and long hours. You know a consultant that often works with your group who would be a perfect fit for project manager. The only issue is, although she is an expert in the field, the project itself is not something that would interest her.

After reviewing the resources for this week, write the text for a persuasive e-mail, encouraging the consultant to accept the offer and come to work on the project. You will post your argument to the discussion board as part of your original post this week.

As you formulate your initial Discussion posting and prepare replies to your colleagues’ postings, review your class readings and conduct additional research in the Walden Library. Contemplate the following statements and questions about persuasion and coercion and incorporate them into your writing as you formulate your response. You do not necessarily have to answer these directly, but they are intended to stimulate your critical thinking process, and they should form a background for your response. Evidence of your reasoning will be a component of your weekly Discussion grade.

  • What should be the role of persuasion in critical thinking?
  • What are the differences between logical persuasion and emotional persuasion?

A scholarly response based on your research, your critical thinking, and your own experiences. Your response should address the following:

  • Post the text of your persuasive e-mail.
  • What are the differences between persuasion and coercion? Is it appropriate for a manager to use coercion? What about emotional persuasion? When?
  • How one would you persuade the client from your project in similar fashion? Do you think persuasion has a place in making your argument? Why or why not?

Assignment 2:

Consider the following statements:

  • A black cat ran in front of me on my way to work, and when I got to work, I found out I’d lost a big account.
  • Tiger Woods was unfaithful to his wife, which proves you can’t trust golfers.
  • All lawyers are crooks!

What do these statements have in common? They are all fallacies—conclusions reached through faulty reasoning. Unfortunately, fallacies are a common practice and can quickly derail otherwise logical arguments. The more you study critical thinking, the more you realize it is not often practiced by society at large. TV advertisements, news commentators, and politicians all use illogical arguments or twisted “facts” to persuade others to accept their point of view. The critical thinker, however, asks, “Is this true?”

Fallacies at the centerpiece of an argument greatly reduced its value. In the following scenario, you will get to try your hand at identifying a variety of fallacies, based on this week’s readings.

The marketing manager has proposed the following as the new advertising campaign. As you read it, identify at least three different types of fallacies, which you will use as the beginning of this week’s Discussion posting.

  • How long have you been sitting in front of the television getting fat and lazy? Wouldn’t you like to find a means of exercise that will shape your body while you are reading, watching television, or otherwise occupying your time? The solution is here, the Thigh-master 5000. Purchase a Thigh-master 5000 today! Actor Tim Allen has recommended the Thigh-master to all of his viewers. He can tell you all the facts. For one, the Thigh-master 5000 is one of the best-designed exercise machines on the market. Our machine will last nearly forever and is practically indestructible! It is built out of a duralumin poly alloy that is less expensive than other commonly used materials, but it is as strong as steel.
  • The pseudo-leather cover is soft to the touch and shapes itself to your body, so you’ll find it more comfortable than any other leg-working machine. You will find our price to be lower than any other product available. We will refund your money if you find a better price! Our competitor, the Leg-o-matic company, does offer a lifetime warranty for their product. But do you really want to purchase products from a company that had lawsuits last year concerning customer safety? Obviously they do not have the same commitment to their products that we do to ours, and, therefore, our product is superior to theirs. So get with our program! Either you can spend $45 and be in better shape than ever, or you can remain a couch potato. Purchase the Thigh-master 5000 today.

As you formulate your initial Discussion posting and prepare replies to your colleagues’ postings, review your class readings and conduct additional research in the Walden Library. Contemplate the following statements and questions about fallacies and incorporate them into your writing as you formulate your response. You do not necessarily have to answer these directly, but they are intended to stimulate your critical thinking process, and they should form a background for your response. Evidence of your reasoning will be a component of your weekly Discussion grade.

  • Can a person or organization be believed and trusted as an authority without investigation or evidence? Explain your answer. Are there any circumstances in which readers do not need to carefully assess whether or not fallacies are present?
  • If you found out that the reasoning behind a long-practiced and cherished management belief was faulty, would you abandon it? What would you do if your organization continued to support the belief?

A scholarly response based on your research, your critical thinking, and your own experiences. Your response should address the following:

  • Read through a few business articles from a newspaper or business magazine and identify one that contains fallacies. Provide the reference as well as a brief synopsis of the article and describe the fallacies you identified.
  • Describe the potential implications of believing something without analysis. Provide a specific example as part of your discussion or connect your response to the article you selected.
  • As a manager, how can you help others become more aware of and able to identify and correct fallacies in their thinking?

Assignment 3: Part 1

For the Alternate Viewpoints Part 1: Stance posting, you will post one paragraph that briefly identifies and explains your stance on your chosen subject.

Alternate Viewpoints Part 1: Stance

People are raised to respect the beliefs of their family and their society. In arenas such as politics, the focus is all about persuading someone that a certain set of beliefs is correct, while the opponent’s is faulty. There is often no middle ground or attempt to reach a consensus. But critical thinkers strive for better. To better understand a problem, it is important to analyze it from all sides. This means considering the other point of view, even if it is contrary to your deepest-held convictions.

Select one of the following topics (or a similar management topic of your choice): green business, outsourcing, government bailouts, unions, financial regulation, energy, etc.

Write one paragraph that briefly identifies and explains your stance on the subject.

ASSIGNEMNT 3: PART 2

Based on your experience and your research:

Post by Day 5 a brief statement of your original position and your 1- to 2-page counter argument. Include at least one scholarly resource from the Walden Library to justify the new viewpoint, while answering the following questions:

  • Discuss how the process of exploring the topic from another viewpoint shaped your approach to analyzing the topic.
  • What have you learned about seeing different sides of the issue? How will you translate what you learned into your management practices?

Be sure to support your work with specific citations from this week’s resources and any additional sources.
