LOOKING FOR AN ENTRY LEVEL ESSAY!!!

Silent Spring is a very old book and is approaching its 60th anniversary. As you are very likely aware, Silent Spring was critical in pointing out the many environmental issues that faced early 20th century American society. Fortunately, many of those issues have been addressed in the last 60 years. However, there are still “reverberations” of the past. That is, we aren’t going to make DDT legal again any time in the near future, but to say that we have completely solved the issue of pesticide use and toxicity is far from the truth. The same can be said for the other environmental issues presented by Rachel Carson. We have made great strides in helping the environment, but there is still much to be done, and there is always the chance that we may slip backwards. For http://www.acemyhomework.com/postproject.php#this project, your goals will be to…

·         Link the stories, ideas and concepts of Silent Spring to the 21st century.

·         Develop a deeper appreciation for the book, and the role it has had in changing our society.

·         Contribute to positive change in our society by becoming aware of environmental issues, and using your new knowledge to address them.

The actual project itself will take the form of a 5 paragraph essay (about 1 to 2 single spaced pages). You must also include references in any common format (this does not count towards the paragraph/page limit).

The two options below are the possible formats for your essay, please choose one of the options below.

1.      Write a “current events” essay. Do some reading about current environmental issues in the United States. Report on this issue and link it to stories and ideas in Silent Spring. Take a stance on what should be done about this issue.

2.      Write a letter to President Trump or EPA Chief Pruitt about an environmental issue and why it is important.  Find an environmental issue you are passionate about, and try to persuade either of these two to take your stance on it. Use Silent Spring as a way to strengthen your argument, and convince them to also read Silent Spring.

To help you with your project, consider the following:

1.      What is the driving force behind the events of Silent Spring? How do those forces still come into play today?

2.      What has happened in between the writing of Silent Spring and now? Why were those changes, laws, etc. put into place?

3.      What are you, yourself, passionate about?
