1. Choose an African American essayist, writer or poet of the era and write a brief biography of this author (must be at least six complete sentences). The essayist must be from the pre-1905 US. 

2. Select one of the author’s works. You will need to provide a copy of the work. Complete an in-depth analysis of the authors work exploring the words, meanings, message, symbolism, or context of what the author may be trying to convey to the reader. Now select/choose a theme that you believe best represents this author’s work in relation to African Americans and the Harlem Renaissance. Be sure to include direct references from the author’s work to support your analysis and choice of theme.

3. Choose an African American artist, musician, singer, or photographer of the era and write a brief biography (same requirements as #1) of this artist.

4. Select one of the artist’s works. You will need to provide a copy of their work. Complete an in-depth analysis of the

artist’s work exploring the color, texture, words, lyrics, layout, meanings, symbols, or context of what the artist may be

trying to convey to his audience. Now select/choose a theme that you believe best represents this artist’s work in relation

to African Americans and the Harlem Renaissance. Be sure to include direct references from artist’s work to support your analysis and choice of theme.

5. Write a summary of the Harlem Renaissance explaining how it impacted the lives of African Americans and American society as a whole (minimum of ten complete sentences).
